Since I’ve been home full-time I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing individuals on their health and wellness. I’d say about 40% of these women have experienced some kind of gut health issue that needed to be addressed. Therefore, I wanted to touch on the importance of not only taking a probiotic but making sure that you are taking the RIGHT probiotic.

The Importance of Probiotics to Improve Gut Health
I’ve done some extensive research on probiotics over the past few months. Enough research to narrow down two probiotic brands that I can say with confidence that I fully stand behind. These two brands are Silver Fern Brand and Just Thrive. Both brands utilize high quality strains that are formulated for both adults and kids.
As a fitness nutrition specialist who works 1:1 with nutrition clients on a daily basis, I am very drawn to the research. I guess you could say I’m a little geeky when it comes to researching supplements and the latest science-based articles. I just want to be sure that MY clients are utilizing the most effective nutrition strategies to date.
There are a few reasons why I have recommended Silver Fern Brand specifically over the past few months:
- Their probiotic is one of the top in the market, if not the top brand. I like that it is convenient – you only need to take 1 capsule per day and it can be easily mixed into any food or beverage. I also love that it does not need to be refrigerated. In fact, your probiotic should not need to be refrigerated. It should be able to endure heat up to at least 170 degrees F. I have also read in research that this brand has not shown to have any side effects to date, which is always a good note to make.
- In the past, I’ve tried other food products from this company and both myself and my husband really enjoyed them – especially their baking mixes and popcorn. There is, however, a blessing and a curse within these products and that is their high fiber content. Fiber is something that I have all of my clients track because I understand that too little fiber or too much fiber can play a toll on your digestive system. So, it is a great thing that Silver Fern has infused fiber into all of their products. HOWEVER, when you are sitting on the couch at night and enjoying a large bag of kettle corn or cheddar popcorn it is VERY difficult to stop eating after one handful. So, the whole fiber thing could backfire 🙂 Just be careful. But aside from that little FYI, the products are great!
So what are probiotics as opposed to Prebiotics?
PROBIOTICS are live beneficial bacteria found in certain foods or supplements & PREBIOTICS are FOOD for these live beneficial bacteria
PREBIOTICS, which again is the food for these live beneficial bacteria, are types of fiber that we cannot digest but they feed the bacteria in the digestive system. We cannot digest these fibers, but our good gut bacteria can. They actually support healthy digestion and immune function.
Just like we thrive on balanced macronutrients, eating balanced amounts of pro- and prebiotics can help ensure that you have the right balance of these bacteria, which should then improve your health.
2 things to remember:
1. We want to start focusing more on our gut and feeding our gut bacteria healthy things
2. You can take a probiotic supplement or feed the bacteria (probiotics already in your gut) with prebiotics found in things like vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, etc. Essentially, we want to eat whole foods that provide us with soluble fiber.
If you know that your gut is unhealthy and you don’t consume a lot of whole food sources on a regular basis, you might want to consider supplementing with probiotics. I have a few of my clients on probiotics from Silver Fern and their feedback is that since taking the product for a few weeks, their irregularity with bowel movements has either subsided or completely dissappeared.
As I mentioned, these bacteria regulate everything in our body, including our metabolism. So, if you need to restore your metabolism, control hunger, or decrease chronic inflammation in your body then you should consider supplementing with probiotics.
I really want you to feel empowered to live a lifestyle of freedom from fad diets and diet pills. I want to educate you on the importance of nutrition fitting into your lifestyle rather than re-arranging your lifestyle to fit nutritional ideals.
